Students, professors, and staff, join us next Monday to take a photo in front of the Colón statue in Plaza de Colón with a banner showing support of Indigenous Peoples Day. This photo will be used as part of the “IPD Boston” campaign and will be posted in the Tufts Daily as well as other media sources.
As many of you know, last year Tufts University voted to change the name of “Columbus Day” to Indigenous Peoples Day in order to continue shifting the institutional and academic conscious of Tufts University to one that acknowledges the connections between the oppressed histories and present day oppression of Indigenous Peoples.
Currently, there is a movement in the city of Boston to recognize Indigenous Peoples Day as Columbus Day overlooks a painful history of colonialism, enslavement, discrimination and land grabs.
The photo will be followed by free bocadillos generously provided by Susan and the rest of the Tufts-Skidmore Spain staff at the program center before the Mindfulness and Justice talk! (You must be in the photo to have bocadillos)
This is a really powerful opportunity for us to show solidarity with indigenous communities even while abroad! If you are interested in writing an op-ed piece or short blurb of why IPD is important to you, please email me.
