Como estudiante de sociología en Tufts he podido trabajar como asistente de investigación con mi advisor, la profesora Helen Marrow. Durante el año pasado, ella me enseñó muchísimo sobre investigación sociológica, gracias a lo cual he aprendido a hacer análisis cualitativo. Mi trabajo con ella me ha fascinado tanto que cuando me enteré de que una de las opciones de practicas este semestre era de trabajar en investigación con el profesor Josep Lobera, supe que había encontrado la practica que quería hacer.

Trabajar con el profesor Lobera ha sido muy interesante ya que he tenido la oportunidad de explorar temas que me parecen interesantes y que contribuyen a los trabajos de investigación que esta haciendo el. Ha sido una oportunidad no solo de continuar aprendiendo sobre investigación sociológica, sino también de aprender más sobre nuevos temas que no conocía antes y que en cierto modo han complementado mi experiencia en España.

Algunos de los temas de investigación tienen una conexión con los temas que vemos en la clase de Is Spain Different?, lo cual me gusta mucho ya que me ayudan a entender más algunos temas. Como amante de la sociología, esta practica no se ha sentido para nada como un trabajo ya que me gusta mucho investigar temas nuevos porque así puedo extender mi aprendizaje fuera del aula de clases.

El profesor Lobera sabe mucho sobre varios temas así que trabajar con él también es una oportunidad de aprender, ya que siempre aprendes algo hablando con él, a mí me pasa cuando tenemos nuestras reuniones semanales. Esta práctica es perfecta si eres un estudiante a quien le gusta el trabajo independiente ya que no tendrás que ir a una oficina en horas especificas porque puedes trabajar según tu horario. Sin embargo, a veces puede ser difícil ya que no tienes un equipo que te ayude a ser disciplinado con tu trabajo, así que es una gran oportunidad para aprender responsabilidad y organización.

Mi tema principal de investigación este semestre ha estado relacionado a las actitudes políticas y la participación política de inmigrantes y ha sido súper interesante. He aprendido mucho sobre el tema según análisis en varios países y el profesor Lobera me ha enseñado a conectar varias teorías de investigación para poder crear mi propia teoría o conclusión sobre el tema, lo cual me vendrá muy bien cuando yo comience a hacer mis propias investigaciones en el futuro. ¡Hay muchísimos otros temas que investigar lo cual hace que esta practica jamás sea aburrida!

As a sociology student at Tufts, I have worked as a research assistant with my advisor, Professor Helen Marrow. During the past year, she has taught me about sociological research and qualitative analysis. Working with her has been so fascinating that when I found out one of the internship options this semester was working as a research assistant with Professor Josep Lobera, I knew I found the internship I wanted to do.

Working with Professor Lobera has been interesting because I have had the opportunity to explore topics that interest me and contribute to the research he is doing. I have been able to continue learning about sociological research and new topics that I am not familiar with, which in a way, have helped complement my experiences in Spain.

Some of the research topics are connected with the subjects we talk about in our Is Spain Different? class, which I appreciate since they help me understand some of those subjects more in-depth. As a lover of sociology, this internship has not felt like a job since I enjoy research because I can extend my learning outside the classroom.

Professor Lobera knows a lot about various subjects so working with him is also an opportunity to learn since you always learn something by talking to him, as it often happens to me when we have our weekly meetings. This internship is perfect if you are a student who likes independent work because you will not have to go to an office at specific times and can work according to your schedule. However, it can be challenging to not have a team to keep you accountable and help you stay disciplined with your work, so it is a great opportunity to learn responsibility and organization.

My main topic of research this semester has been related to the political attitudes and political participation of immigrants and it has been very interesting. I have learned a lot about the subject by analyzing case studies in different countries, and Professor Lobera has taught me to connect different research theories in order to formulate my own theories on the subject, which will definitely come in handy when I start doing my own research in the future. There are many other topics to research and analyze throughout this internship which ensures you’re never bored!
