Este semestre he podido conocer un poco más de España ya que he visitado Toledo, Valencia, Segovia, Granada, Sevilla y por último Barcelona. Cada lugar me ha encantado pero desde hace mucho tiempo he querido visitar Barcelona por lo cual debo dedicarle un post a esta maravillosa ciudad.

Una de las primeras cosas que noté al llegar a Barcelona fue la diferencia de arquitectura en comparación con Madrid. Barcelona está llena de edificios muy interesantes y modernistas, y claro, también los trabajos famosos de Antoni Gaudí. No soy estudiante de arquitectura así que sé muy poco sobre teorías y arquitectos históricos, pero sí sé que los diseños de Gaudí son únicos en el mundo y al verlos en persona pude entender por qué.

Me emocionó mucho ver la Sagrada Familia porque estoy segura de que jamás he visto algo parecido. El diseño es increíble y la experiencia de estar dentro de un edificio que aún sigue en construcción también fue interesante. Me fascinó visitar el Park Güell porque me gustan mucho los parques en general pero este tiene algo especial. También visité el museo Casa Gaudí cuando estaba en el parque y creo que nunca había deseado poder mudarme a una casa como lo deseé en ese momento porque me fascino.

Aparte de la arquitectura, Barcelona es una ciudad con mucho activismo político. Esto es evidente al caminar por las calles y ver como hay grafiti y carteles que tratan de diferentes temas. Muchos de ellos los he estudiado en mis clases este semestre así que fue interesante poder ver estos debates en persona. Incluso aprendí sobre temas que no conocía y que afectan a la ciudad, solo con ver ciertos carteles y luego investigar de qué se trataban.

También fue una nueva experiencia escuchar un idioma diferente sin tener que salir de España. Aunque no entendí nada de catalán cuando las personas lo hablaban, me pareció interesante escucharlo ya que soy una persona que admira los idiomas y me gusta escucharlos aunque la mayoría del tiempo no me entero de nada de lo que dicen. Creo que es único que España tenga varios idiomas oficiales y es una buena experiencia poder escucharlos.

A pesar de que hacía frio decidí visitar la Barceloneta porque me encanta la playa y no pude resistirlo. No me atreví a entrar en el agua porque estaba muy fría, pero fue divertido poder relajarme en la arena por unas horas después de explorar Barcelona. También visité un restaurante cerca de la playa para comer paella y creo que ha sido la mejor que he comido durante mi tiempo en España (me atrevo a admitir que incluso mejor que la que probé en Valencia…).

Aunque me encanta Madrid y disfruto mucho de pasar tiempo ahí, me encantó poder visitar y conocer Barcelona. Me dejó con la impresión de ser una ciudad un poco más grande que Madrid, y no tuve suficiente tiempo para poder visitar todo lo que quería ver. Sin embargo, eso solo es una excusa para volver a visitar Barcelona, así que espero volver pronto.

This semester I have been getting to know Spain by visiting Toledo, Valencia, Segovia, Granada, Seville, and Barcelona. I have loved each place but for since a long time ago, I have wanted to visit Barcelona so I must dedicate a blog post to this wonderful city.

One of the first things I noticed when I arrived in Barcelona was the difference in architecture in comparison to Madrid. Barcelona is full of very interesting and modernist buildings, and of course the famous works of Antoni Gaudí. I’m not an architecture student so I know very little about theories and historical architects, but I do know that Gaudí’s designs are unique in the world and when I saw them in person I could understand why.

I was very moved to see the Sagrada Familia because I am sure that I have never seen anything like it. The design is incredible and the experience of being inside a building that is still under construction was interesting. I loved visiting Park Güell because I like parks a lot but this one has something special. I also visited the Casa Gaudí museum when I was in the park and I think I had never wished I could move to a house as I wanted at that moment because I was fascinated by every room inside it.

Apart from architecture, Barcelona is a city with a lot of political activism. This is evident when you walk through the streets and see how all the graffiti and posters that deal with different topics. Many of which I learned in my classes this semester, so it was interesting to see these discussions in person. I even learned about topics that affect the city and I was not familiar with, just by looking at certain posters and then investigating what they were about.

It was also a new experience to listen to a different language without having to leave Spain. Although I did not understand any Catalan when people spoke it, I found it interesting to listen to, since I am a person who admires languages and I like to listen to them although most of the time I have no idea what people are saying. I think it is unique that Spain has several official languages and it is a good experience to be able to listen to them depending on which region you’re visiting.

Even though it was cold I visited the Barceloneta because I love the beach and I could not resist. I did not dare to enter the water because it was very cold, but it was fun to be able to relax in the sand for a moment after exploring Barcelona. I visited a restaurant near the beach to eat some paella and I think it was the best paella I have eaten during my time in Spain (I dare to admit that it was even better than the one I tried in Valencia…)

Although I love Madrid and I really enjoy spending time here, I loved visiting and getting to know Barcelona. I leave with the impression of it being a little bigger than Madrid, and I did not have enough time to visit everything I wanted to see. However, that is just an excuse to revisit Barcelona, so I hope to return soon!
