Queer Culture in Spain

Sara Ferreiro Lago, PhD. Course frames queer culture and theory in Spain through an interdisciplinary approach (historical, sociological and philosophical), highlighting how they differ from LGTBIQA+ activism and LGTBIQA+ cultural manifestations and intellectual discourse in the United States. Course studies these parallels and differences by examining queer activism, representation and thought in three major areas: the history of the LGTBIQA+   movement from Francoism to present day, cultural references dealing with queer culture in late Francoism, the transition to democracy and recent decades, and queer theory and gender theory in Spain. Course includes an focus on the intense conflict between Spanish feminist schools that take a transgender-exclusionary posture and those that are trans-inclusive, and concludes with a reflection on the importance of intersectional, inclusive LGBTQ+ perspectives.
