Sex, Lies & Intrigue: Women & Patriarchy in Spanish Golden Age Drama

Course analyzes the construction of gender and the dynamics and contexts of sex, sexuality and love in Golden Age Spanish drama, examining the relationship of politics and religion to discourses on the female body, marriage, contraception, female prostitution, and more. Special attention given to the joys of female subversion, and the ways in which both female protagonists and women authors vigorously question and subvert the restrictions imposed upon them in Catholic patriarchal institutions in early modern Spain.
