Working at the Ojeda Clinic was incredibly useful for my development as a future medical student and doctor. I learned about what working in a clinic is really like, and got the opportunity to work alongside medical professionals who are some of the best in their fields. I was introduced to dozens of topics in the fields of allergy and asthma, all while developing my Spanish language skills by interacting with people from hundreds of different backgrounds. While I don’t think I’m going to work in a clinic like this in the future, I am thankful for this experience and am glad that I learned so much there. Andrew Bender, Tufts. Fall 2022
Eliana Wolpaw, Skidmore     Irene Pantekidis, Tufts.   Spring 2022
I am currently collecting demographic and other data from medical records for a research project on videoconsults, which will be a semester-long project. I also meet with the team of doctors each Wednesday to discuss difficult cases and some administrative business. I would recommend this internship – the doctors are all very nice and you can learn a lot if you ask questions. Logan McPherson, Skidmore. Spring 2020

My internship was one of my favorite experiences abroad. I was able to gain valuable clinical skills that I will bring to me in my future medical schooling, as well as important Spanish medical vocabulary. I reaffirmed my career goals in the clinic, but I also went through some difficult times of being frustrated at myself. I grew through these experiences and I had to learn to practice patience with myself. Now I know that I can take on a difficult, foreign experience and preserve through it. I also know that medicine is the right career for me, and I am thankful that this internship helped me to see that. Iris Becene, Tufts. Fall 21019

I’m doing a mix of things: shadowing daily consultations with doctors, working on an independent research project on the antihistamine chemical DAO, and many other smaller tasks. I would highly recommend this internship, especially to premed students who want to improve their language skills in a practical medical context and want to explore the discipline of allergies and asthma. Not only has the internship made an extreme improvement in my medical language skills, but it’s been an exciting way to learn, listen, and practice medicine within a Spanish system!        Doing my internship at the highly recognized and respected Asthma and Allergy Clinic of Doctors Ojeda, has been extremely transformative. I have been able to study, in depth, the pathways, diagnosis, and treatment (short and long-term) of allergic reactions as well as the inner working of the medical system in Spain while shadowing, performing data and microscopic cytology analysis, as well as blood serum laboratory work. Asthma and allergies does not need to be what one may want to work in, in order to get the most out of this internship. This experience has been priceless and I would never trade it for the world. Yosbel Victores, Tufts. Fall2018
The most important thing about this experience was learning how to immerse myself in a new community and learning to become a part of it. It was challenging at first, but I learned to overcome all the obstacles I faced. I have made an impact in this community and I know it was as rewarding for me as it was for them. This experience has been life changing and I will take it with me wherever I go in life. Danny Nguyen, Tufts. Fall 2018

Taking on an internship in a foreign country in a foreign language is one of the most gratifying experiences one can have. Though filled with many difficulties, my internship at Clínica Ojeda allowed me to pursue a field I am interested in, improve my Spanish, and see another aspect of the Spanish culture: the work environment. My main project during the semester was a retrospective study on children with drug allergies, work that I am proud of and will be presented at a conference in October. Additionally, the internship provided for me another community here in Madrid that I am forever thankful for.  Michelle Chen, Tufts. Spring 2018

I want to thank for the internship. It has provided me with new sources of knowledge, new skills, and new sets of relationships in which I can potentially reach out to in the future. I felt proud of the work I managed to complete in the semester and I wish I could stay for more to continue by their sides. It was, without a doubt, a wonderful experience to have had in my time here.
The Ojeda Clinic of Asthma and Allergy is a great internship in a small and cozy clinic. During my time here, I did wet-bench lab work, shadowing of doctors, research studies, and participated in lab meetings. I cannot recommend enough how beneficial it was for my learning, my Spanish, and my confidence in career path. Dafni Frohman, Tufts. Fall 2017

I strongly encourage any future students of Tufts-Skidmore Spain to apply for this internship if they are interested in a career in medicine. They will meet and become friends with some of the nicest and most accomplished alergologists around, and they will learn all kinds of valuable skills from working at the clinic. It is a one-of-a-kind opportunity that they will not regret. Peter Bee, Tufts. Spring 2017
Working at the Clinica Ojeda de Asma y Alergia has been a fantastic experience! This year, we have been working on a clinical research project that deals with patients who have been treated for food allergies. This is definitely a serious internship, so be prepared to work, but it´s a great way to get medical-research experience while abroad. Katie Campbell, Tufts. Spring 2017
Overall, my experience working at the Clínica Ojeda de Asma y Alergia has been incredible. Though I’m not yet convinced that allergy medicine is the right path for me, the combination of self-discovery, intercultural observation, and fun at my internship has reaffirmed my desire to become a doctor. I have learned so much about allergies, immunology, and oral desensitization treatments that I will continue to expand upon this new knowledge in my future. This internship, as well as the people I work with, has been a great experience, and I can’t wait to apply everything I’ve learned at the Clinic to my work in the United States. Katie Campbell, Tufts. Fall 2016
Katie Campbell & Peter Bae con el Doctor Ojeda
Overall, I am extremely grateful to have had the opportunity to intern at the Ojeda Clinic this past semester. Although I do not think I will pursue a career in the field of allergy medicine myself, I have learned many things that are incredibly important in any branch of medicine. From the biology of allergic reactions to the less-concrete science of compassionate patient care, the doctors at the clinic have taught me a great deal about medicine and the work of a doctor. I also learned through experience the immeasurable power and value of knowing multiple languages in this line of work. Furthermore, I came to Madrid hoping that this study abroad experience would help me become more fluid and better able to think on my feet and deal with unexpected and difficult challenges, and my internship at the clinic has definitely given me various opportunities to grow in this respect. And the best part has been that, throughout the entire experience, Pedro, Isabel, Rocío, and Gema have treated us as their friends, and not simply as their interns. They expect us to work hard and to do our job well, but they have received us with open arms and done everything possible to make us feel at home: they are always happy to explain biological and medical concepts in greater detail if we are having trouble understanding them; they give us access to all of the clinic’s resources and encourage us to explore and ask questions; they even take us out to coffee sometimes! It has been an honor and a pleasure working with all of them, and I cannot wait to return in the spring. Peter Bae, Tufts. Fall 2016
